Fun portrait shoot in a wheat field

Posted by: Neil In: lauren|melanie|Photography|photos

free spirited laurenJust about every week I drive past this large farm field that seams to be growing different crops each time the re-plant. The last crop they planted seemed to be wheat. I had watched it grow, slowly but surely getting to be about waist high. After a few months, the wheat turned a nice golden tan color (as wheat does before they harvest it)… I thought ‘that would be a great place for a portrait shoot in the late afternoon or sunset’. Pre-occupied with baby on the way, I kept putting it off. ‘Next weekend…’ I kept telling myself.

Then, one weekend as I was driving past the fields, there were tractors (and the sorts of equipment used to harvest) cutting down all the wheat. ‘Crap!’ I said to myself, I could not wait anymore… I wanted to get some shots of Melanie in that field while she was still pregnant. There were images in my head of what the scenes would look like. That weekend, we had Lauren with us, and we planned to go out into the field in the late afternoon.

We parked across the street, and walked over to the field. Out of acres and acres of wheat, I would estimate that there was less than 5% of the crop left. And it had been left there as if it were waiting for me to get the shoot I was thinking of. We walking along the waist high wheat, using the part of the cut-down wheat where the tractors drove. Once we got far enough into the field, I smashed down some of the wheat to make a small area for them to stand in while I shot.

The photos came out very nice. And I’m definitely glad I got the chance to get out there before it was all chopped down. Check out the choice ones from the shoot.
